Counselling Intern in Edmonton

EMDR Therapist

Cristina Orobio Edmonton

Hello! My name is Cristina. I’m a graduate student in my final year of my Master of Counselling Psychology program at City University of Seattle. I’m super excited to be completing my internship here at Solace Psychology and to have the opportunity to apply my learning into practice!

I graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology (Major) and Biological Sciences (Minor) at the University of Alberta. During my first year of undergrad, I went into Sciences assuming that I would follow my Dad’s footsteps and eventually walk across the stage with an Engineering degree. Turns out, I was not made for math and physics! My fascination with the human brain and my passion for helping people have led me to pursue my education and a career in the mental health and counselling field - and I love it! Over the years, I’ve gained invaluable experience working with children and adults with neurodevelopmental disorders including Autism, ADHD, and intellectual disabilities. I also enjoy counselling individuals so that they can learn valuable tools to manage anxiety, depression, and life transitions. More recently, I’ve acquired experience working with high-risk youth and young adults faced with addiction and trauma. I aspire to continue providing counselling services to children, youth, and adults with various mental health and wellness needs.

My preferred theoretical orientation consists of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as Mindfulness-Based practices, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFT), and Attachment-Based Therapy. I am also completing training in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), which is the gold-standard treatment for PTSD and anxiety. In addition to using these modalities in my practice, I strive to implement a strength-based and a Person-Centered Approach, with the intent to establish a strong therapeutic relationship with you. My goal is for us to work collaboratively and to work towards meaningful change. I aim to hold a safe and non-judgmental space for you especially in your times of vulnerability. I believe that you are the expert in your own life, and my role as your counsellor is to walk alongside you in your journey to personal recovery.

Outside of school and work, you can find me indulging in savoury dishes and sweet treats from local restaurants. Pre-covid, my husband and I were avid travelers and foodies; we hope to share this experience with our little ones when it’s much safer to do so (…hopefully soon)! Other things I enjoy doing are yoga, baking, playing volleyball, and snowboarding.
