Dialectical Behavioural Therapy

DBT SESSIONS & GROUPS in EDMONTON

About Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT):

Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT) is a skills-based therapy aimed at helping people manage distress and tolerate uncomfortable emotions. If you describe yourself as highly emotional or moody, are easily triggered, and tend to have ongoing crisis situations or relational challenges, DBT may be the right fit for you. DBT was derived from Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and consists of 4 components: emotion regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. DBT skills can be adapted to help children and teens, as well as adults.

Throughout your DBT sessions, you will learn various DBT tools and skills to help you identify and effectively express your emotions as well as cope with difficult situations. You will also learn how to self-soothe and self-regulate to calm the nervous system and prevent emotional overreactions

Other DBT techniques aim at strengthening your relationships and may involve implementing healthy boundaries in your life and learning to say “no” to activities and people that do not serve you well. By the end of DBT therapy, you will be well equipped to handle challenges in the present moment and will be well prepared to tackle future obstacles.

Our DBT Therapists have extensive training and experience in DBT and have learnt from the most experienced facilitators across Canada. We also offer DBT groups for individuals struggling with emotional regulation, trauma healing, addiction and mental health concerns in Edmonton.

"Restore a sense of peace and calmness in your life when learning DBT. Create the life you've always imagined."

  • Improved quality of life
  • Adopt a more balanced mindset (Wise Mind skills)
  • Short term therapy
  • Skills-based: learn various practical strategies that can be applied right away
  • Colourful, helpful handouts to take home and practice skills (from Solace Psychology)
  • Noticeable, effective results early on
  • Increased stability in life, less reactive/impulsive
  • Enhanced quality of relationship with self and others

How quickly does DBT work?

The harder you work, the quicker DBT works. It is all about learning new skills and becoming the best version of yourself every day. The key is that you must be committed to practicing DBT skills between sessions so that you can begin to rewire your brain and create new, healthier pathways.

DBT can be offered in group or individual therapy sessions. The number of sessions that you complete depends on your life situation and therapeutic goals. Since everyone's needs are diverse, our therapists may utilize DBT skills in counselling sessions in conjunction with other therapy methods.

People typically report feeling better after just a few sessions of using DBT skills. You are worth it.
