WHEN ANXIETY BECOMES AN ISSUE
What is Anxiety?
Normal Anxiety
Some level of anxiety is normal and actually healthy for us. It pushes us to do our best and meet deadlines. If you feel anxious about writing an exam or going to a job interview, your anxiety is telling you that these things are important and you need to prepare wisely.
Anxiety can also warn us about potential danger. If you are camping and you spot a grizzly bear, your fight-or-flight response kicks in and your body is prepared to fight the bear or run away from him. If you didn’t have this alarm system, you wouldn’t have the chance to amp up your energy to survive.
Problem Anxiety
Anxiety becomes a concern when it spills into various parts of your life, consumes your mind and body, and restricts you from doing things you love. Problem anxiety does not fade away once you’ve written your exam or attended your job interview. It lingers and can become worse if not dealt with. It can lead to panic attacks and ongoing worry, and can be difficult to manage. Problem anxiety senses everyday things as a threat and sounds the alarm, leading to a racing heartbeat and difficulty breathing.
It is best to start counselling when you first notice your anxiety, but it is never too late to get help.

UNDERSTAND YOUR ANXIETY SYMPTOMS
Types of Anxiety Disorders
Generalized Anxiety Disorder
Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) is the most common type of anxiety disorder. It involves persistent and excessive worry that interferes with daily activities. You may also experience physical symptoms, such as muscle tension, stomach aches (stomach is in a knot), bathroom issues, or feeling jittery (racing heart). You may feel on edge, irritable, or restless, become easily fatigued, or have difficulty concentrating. Many people with GAD have trouble falling or staying asleep as worries cloud their mind. Anxious thoughts may revolve around everyday things such as family matters, job responsibilities, health or minor issues such as chores or appointments.
Panic Disorder
Panic Disorder involves recurrent panic attacks, which are accompanied by physical and psychological distress. Common somatic symptoms include: heart palpitations, sweating, shaking, chest pain, dizziness, feeling like you are choking or cannot breathe and nausea.
Social Anxiety Disorder
Social Anxiety Disorder is characterized by intense fear, anxiety, or discomfort in social settings — such as meeting new people, speaking in front of others, or being the center of attention. Individuals with social anxiety often worry about being judged, embarrassed, rejected, or viewed negatively by others. This fear can lead to avoidance of social situations, which may impact daily functioning, relationships, or career opportunities.
Separation Anxiety Disorder
Separation Anxiety Disorder can affect children and adults. People with this disorder experience excessive anxiety or fear when separated or away from the person that they are attached to. This anxiety may also come about when just thinking about being away from this person. The fear can manifest as nightmares, physical symptoms and preoccupied worrisome thoughts. Children may try to avoid going to school or have a difficult time sleeping in their own room.
Phobias
A specific phobia involves extreme, unrealistic fear of a specific object, activity or situation that would usually not cause one harm. It can be very difficult to overcome this fear and often causes significant distress. People with phobias generally try to avoid the feared situations, which actually makes the fear stronger. Examples include being fearful of certain animals, flying, needles, or public speaking.
Agoraphobia
Agoraphobia is an intense fear of situations where escape might be difficult or help may not be readily available in the event of anxiety or panic. These situations are often perceived as overwhelming, unsafe, or potentially embarrassing. This fear can be so severe that it causes significant distress and interferes with daily life and functioning. Individuals with agoraphobia may avoid places such as public transportation, crowded areas, open spaces, enclosed spaces, or even leaving their home altogether.
Selective Mutism
Children with Selective Mutism avoid speaking in some social situations (such as school or new situations), although they typically will speak in environments where they are comfortable (such as at home). They are able to speak and have normal language skills, however, anxiety prevents them from speaking. They may grunt or make noises to communicate when anxious or uncomfortable.

CBT focuses on teaching you practical skills to manage anxiety and stress. CBT helps you break the negative thought patterns that lead to feelings of overwhelm and distress, as well as unhealthy behaviours (like avoidance, procrastination, isolation, and substance abuse). In doing this, you can actually rewire your brain. You will learn effective tools to take action against anxiety to ensure long-lasting change and set yourself up for future success.
CBT has been shown to be just as effective as medication for treating anxiety disorders, and has longer lasting effects. Start taking control of your anxiety today by working with a local Edmonton psychologist who specializes in anxiety disorders.
