Why Affordable Therapy Matters to Our Team

Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet many people hesitate to begin therapy because of the cost. Delaying support can make challenges worse over time, which is why affordable options are so critical.

Choosing low-cost counselling in Edmonton means taking care of yourself and your future without the added stress of financial strain.

  • Students and young adults can access therapy while managing school expenses.

  • Families can seek support for parenting, communication, and conflict resolution without financial hardship.

  • Children can access support for emotional regulation, ADHD, worry/anxiety, and grief, among other concerns, while helping ease the financial stress for parents.

  • Adults and professionals can get help for stress, burnout, or workplace challenges at a manageable rate.

Our goal is to make mental health therapy inclusive, accessible, and sustainable for the Edmonton community (in-person and virtually)  and Alberta-wide (virtually).

Which Therapists Offer Low Cost Therapy at Solace?

One of our key values at Solace Psychology & Wellness is upholding the highest standard of care for our clients. All of our therapists at our Edmonton and St. Albert clinics, including therapists who offer low-cost counselling, adhere to our company policies of maintaining competency in the profession through ongoing professional development, consultation and research. All therapists are also expected to follow ethical guidelines and standards of practice set forth by the College of Alberta Psychologists and the Canadian Psychological Association.

Key Qualities of Therapists in our Low Cost Counselling Program

  • Completion of relevant university-level counselling courses, apart from their Capstone/Thesis and/or internship course.
  • Specialized training in various evidence-based treatments, such as Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), play-based therapy, etc.
  • Student membership with Psychologists’ Association of Alberta (PAA) and/or other counselling associations
  • Ongoing supervision and extra support with your clinical care
  • Competent in screening for and treating diverse mental health disorders, such as anxiety, depression, addiction, PTSD, and ADHD, among others

What is a Master’s Level Counselling Intern Therapist?

Intern Therapists provide compassionate counselling for children, teens and adults as they are completing their Master’s degree in counselling or psychology. All Intern Therapists are closely supervised by experienced Registered Psychologists to ensure you receive safe, ethical, and evidence-based support. They partake in extensive training and weekly case consultation meetings.

What Makes Our Low-Cost Therapy Program Unique?

At Solace Psychology & Wellness, affordability never means sacrificing quality. We are proud to offer low-cost therapy in Edmonton and St. Albert that is professional, ethical, and effective — with the same care and attention expected when working with other clinicians at our private clinic.

Our Master’s Level Counselling Intern Therapists provide compassionate care, drawing on their training and evidence-based approaches. While they may not yet have the same depth of experience as our fully Registered Psychologists or Counsellors, they are carefully supervised and supported to ensure you receive safe, quality, and compassionate therapy.

Professionally Trained Interns and Therapists

Our Master’s Level Counselling Intern Therapists have completed training in leading therapeutic approaches such as EMDR, DBT, CBT, the Gottman Method for couples therapy, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Unlike many low-cost programs, our interns are closely supervised by experienced Registered Psychologists who are highly trained, not new to the field, and have extensive expertise in therapy and clinical supervision.

High Standards of Care

All of our therapists and interns are expected to follow the strict ethical standards of the College of Alberta Psychologists (CAP) and the Canadian Psychological Association (CPA). This ensures that every client receives ethical, professional care.

Flexible Therapy Options and Times

We offer low-cost therapy in-person at our clinic in Edmonton, as well as secure virtual therapy to all Albertans. Our therapists offer flexible appointment times, including daytime, evening and weekends.

A Welcoming, Modern, and Serene Private Clinic

Our private clinic is modern yet cozy, designed to feel both professional and inviting. Clients often describe our coastal-inspired space as serene, warm, and calming — a place where healing feels possible the moment you walk in. Our Client Services Team goes above and beyond to make sure your experience is positive from your very first call or email.

Play Therapy Room for Child Therapy

Our goal is to provide a unique space for the little ones who work hard to learn coping skills and build resilience. That’s why we’ve created a bright and welcoming play therapy room featuring a sandtray, dollhouse, art supplies, therapeuitc books, and comforting toys. These tools support children in developing emotional regulation, coping strategies, and healthy expression.

Whole-Person, Whole-Family Support

At Solace, we go beyond therapy. We provide in-house referrals for massage therapy, nutrition counselling, and assessments. We can also connect you with trusted professionals in the Edmonton area such as psychiatrists, occupational therapists, chiropractors, physiotherapists, and lawyers — ensuring comprehensive, well-rounded care.

Low Cost Therapy in Edmonton Questions Answered

Frequently Asked Questions About Low-Cost Therapy in Edmonton

Yes. Whether you work with a Registered Psychologist or a supervised student Intern Therapist at our Edmonton clinic, you will receive safe, compassionate, and evidence-based care. Clients who have worked with our student interns have shared positive feedback about their therapeutic journey, our serene space, and the professionalism of the team, often claiming that they feel lighter and better equipped to handle the stressors in their life.

Our therapy team offers in-person counselling at our clinic in South Edmonton, as well as virtual therapy for all Albertans. Note that you must reside in Alberta and have a valid Albertan address to access therapy at Solace, as we abide by the standards of the College of Alberta Psychologists.

While we are unable to directly bill for low-cost therapy sessions, we encourage you to ask your insurance provider if student interns are covered on your specific policy. In most cases, we have found that services are not covered by insurance because student therapists are not yet licensed.

Most of our Master’s Level Counselling Intern Therapists practice at our clinic for 6-12 months as a student intern, before transitioning to a Mental Health Therapist, and then to a Registered Provisional Psychologist or Canadian Certified Counsellor. Most are typically here long-term and grow with the clinic as they grow in their career. You are welcome to continue working with them as they progress in their career (fees do increase), or you can transition to another intern therapist to maintain the low-cost fees. Either way, we are here for you for as long as you need.

Absolutely. Many clients begin with reduced-rate sessions and transition to a Registered Psychologist over time for more specialized approaches.

Since psychological assessments require advanced, specialized training in a different branch of psychology, our student therapists only provide counselling services at a reduced rate. However, we do offer psychological assessments at our clinic by Registered Psychologists.

At Solace Psychology & Wellness, supervision is an important part of ensuring quality care in our low-cost therapy program.

Our Master’s Level Counselling Interns are supervised by Registered Psychologists who have advanced training and experience in both therapy and clinical supervision. This process ensures clients receive safe, ethical, and effective support at every stage.

Here’s how supervision works:

  • Weekly Case Consultation: Interns meet regularly with their supervisor to review cases, discuss challenges, and refine their clinical approach.

  • Video Review: Interns securely submit recordings of sessions (with client consent) so supervisors can provide direct feedback on therapy skills, techniques, and client care. You have the option to consent to a counselling video or pass – no pressure.

  • Ongoing Training: Interns participate in both internal and external professional development opportunities to advance their therapeutic skills and knowledge.

  • No Direct Sitting-In: Supervisors do not sit in on therapy sessions. Instead, supervision happens behind the scenes, so clients maintain privacy and comfort while still benefiting from the guidance and oversight of an experienced psychologist.

Our model allows clients to receive affordable therapy with the added benefit of expert oversight, while interns continue to grow and refine their skills under professional guidance.

If you’ve ever worried that counselling might not fit your budget, low-cost therapy is a great option to help you get started.

Don’t live in Edmonton?
