Meet Megan Farnel

M.A.C.P., B.A.., Canadian Certified Counsellor (CCC)

Hello! My name is Megan Farnel, and I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor based in St. Albert. I hold a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology from Yorkville University, as well as a Master’s (Simon Fraser University) and a Bachelor’s (University of Alberta) in English.

I work exclusively with teens and adults, supporting individuals as they navigate life’s challenges, changes, and transitions, including questions of neurodivergence, gender and sexual identity, burnout, grief and loss, and (in)fertility.

Clinical Overview

I offer support to teens (aged 15+) and adults in a wide range of areas including neurodivergence (ADHD, ASD), OCD, burnout, gender and sexual identity, depression, anxiety, and reproductive mental health ((in)fertility, prenatal, postpartum, PMDD).

I believe that the world, including our mental health, is shaped by stories. There is something powerful about claiming ownership over our stories, sharing them with trusted others, and recognizing our own agency and capacity for change. I am particularly invested in what I think of as whole stories for whole people: our mental health and wellness are shaped by the many intersecting systems, relationships, identities, and experiences that make us who we are. My role as a therapist is to hold space for and honour each client’s unique story while supporting them in moving toward the lives they want to build. I believe that clients are the experts in their own lives, and that therapy should be responsive to their individual values, goals, identities, and contexts rather than asking them to fit a predetermined model of wellness. I approach therapy from a trauma-informed and strengths-based perspective, drawing primarily from narrative, person-centred, acceptance and commitment (ACT), attachment-based, cognitive behavioural (CBT), and dialectical behavioural (DBT) approaches. Ultimately, therapy is a collaborative process, and I work with clients to find approaches and strategies that feel meaningful, useful, and well-suited to their individual needs.

Outside of counselling, I am a voracious reader of both fiction and nonfiction, a lifelong gamer, and an enthusiastic writer. I love exploring new places and trying new things, and some of my favourite adventures are the ones I get to share with my partner and our children. Whether we are travelling somewhere new, getting absorbed in a game, or settling in for a quiet evening with a good book, I value the curiosity, creativity, connection, and sense of play that make life feel full.
